What's 'transparent' for?

When you designate a font color the W3 recommends that you also designate a background color. There are some advantages to designating 'transparent:'

1. You could then use the same font designation for a variety of background colors if you wish.
2. The markup will then validate via W3C without you having to designate a background color for each listing.
